Actonel 150mg tablets contain the active ingredient risedronate sodium, a bisphosphonate medicine used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Actonel 150mg is taken once a month to help strengthen bone, decrease the chance of breaking a bone (fracture), and increase bone mass. It works by slowing down bone loss to help maintain bone density and strength.
The recommended dosage is one 150mg tablet taken once a month on the same date each month. Tablets should be swallowed whole with 6-8 oz of plain water at least 30 minutes before the first food, drink, or medication of the day. Actonel should be taken upon waking and before any other daily medications or supplements.
To reduce irritation, do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Actonel. Take supplemental calcium and vitamin D if dietary intake is inadequate.
Side effects may include back pain, headache, upset stomach, abdominal pain, nausea, and joint or muscle pain. Actonel may cause serious jawbone problems or digestive issues.
Notify your doctor if you develop bone or muscle pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or severe pain. Do not take Actonel if you have low calcium levels, kidney problems, or are allergic to any ingredients.
