Abilify® is an atypical antipsychotic. It is recommended and primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Each Bottle contains 30 tablets = Quantity 1
Aripiprazole tablets are indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that works by acting as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and as an antagonist at 5-HT2A receptors.
Each tablet contains aripiprazole in the following strengths: 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, and 30 mg. Tablets also contain inactive ingredients such as lactose monohydrate, corn starch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.
Mechanism of Action:
Aripiprazole exhibits partial agonist activity at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors and antagonist activity at 5-HT2A receptors. Its unique receptor binding profile contributes to its efficacy and safety profile for schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and irritability associated with autistic disorder.
Dosage and Administration:
– Schizophrenia: Initial dose 10-15 mg once daily, target dose range 10-30 mg/day
– Bipolar Mania: Initial dose 15 mg once daily as monotherapy or 10-15 mg once daily as adjunct to lithium or valproate, target dose range 15-30 mg/day
– Irritability with Autistic Disorder: Patients 6-17 years old – Initial dose 2 mg/day, target dose 5-10 mg/day depending on weight
Aripiprazole can be taken with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed, split, or chewed.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, anxiety, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, weakness, and weight gain. Aripiprazole may also increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents. Contact your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings:
Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at increased risk of death. Aripiprazole is not approved for elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
Aripiprazole may cause high blood sugar levels or worsening of diabetes. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or risk factors for diabetes.
Do not take aripiprazole if you are allergic to any ingredient in the product. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions and all medications you are taking before starting aripiprazole.
Aripiprazole should be used cautiously in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that lower the seizure threshold.
Use care when operating machinery or driving until you know how aripiprazole affects you. Aripiprazole may cause drowsiness or dizziness.
Do not stop taking aripiprazole suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this may increase the risk of withdrawal symptoms. The dose should be tapered when discontinuing treatment.
Consult the full prescribing information for complete details on dosage, administration, contraindications, warnings, and side effects.
