Dostinex® contains cabergoline, a dopamine receptor agonist indicated for the treatment of hyperprolactinemic disorders. It is available as 0.5mg tablets for oral administration.
Indications
Dostinex is indicated for the treatment of hyperprolactinemic disorders including inhibition of physiological lactation, galactorrhea, amenorrhea, and infertility. It can be used alone or with other agents.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended starting dose of Dostinex is 0.25mg twice weekly. The dosage may be increased by 0.5mg per week until optimal response is achieved. The maximum recommended dose is 1mg twice weekly. Tablets should be taken with food and not crushed or chewed.
Contraindications
Dostinex is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ergot derivatives or any excipients in Dostinex. It is also contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Warnings and Precautions
– May cause orthostatic hypotension especially during initiation – caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery
– Stop medication if signs of cardiac valvulopathy occur
– Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment
– Advise patients to seek medical attention for persistent visual disturbances
Adverse Reactions
Common adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue, abdominal pain, and orthostatic hypotension. Serious fibrotic reactions have also been reported.
Drug Interactions
Dostinex may interact with dopamine antagonists, macrolide antibiotics, and cyclosporine. Estrogens may decrease efficacy.
Storage and Handling
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Protect from light.
